Cruising at Saunas

If you have never been to a sauna or backroom it may be useful to talk to a friend who has experienced it before. If you are comfortable with asking your friend he may even be able to take you and show you around. Alternatively, you can ask the staff to give you a tour so that you know where everything is. Venues can be quite dark so it is important to give yourself time to work out where everything is. Venues all supply condoms and lube so if you are unsure about how to access them you can ask the staff.

It may be a good idea to observe people when you first enter a venue. Where are people going for sex? Which areas are more social chill out spaces? How are people cruising each other- which cruising strategies seem effective? Which times seem to be the busiest? Much of the communication at venues can be non-verbal and it can take some time to work out the subtleties of cruising people without speaking. That said- there is no rule against having a chat at a sauna or backroom!

Everyone using venues should remember a few simple rules:

  • No means no!
  • Be polite in your advances and rejections.
  • Don’t touch or join in unless invited.
  • Everyone has the right to stop at any point.

A few cruising techniques which are commonly used at venues include:

  • The Stare- make and maintain eye contact signalling that you’re interested in the guy.
  • The Brush Past- walk past and gently brush your hand or arm against him- head for a cubicle- if he follows, you’re in!
  • 1…2…3… Turn- make eye contact, walk past, count to three and turn your head, if he’s looking signal him to follow you.
  • Stand in a Cubicle Doorway- When someone you like walks by, make eye contact, if they linger take a step back into the cubicle and signal for them to follow you.
