Is Bare-Backing Safer with my Fuck Buddy?

Fuck-buddy sex can be the best of both worlds. We get to know someone’s pleasure buttons without the demands that can come with a committed relationship.

Wearing a condom means never having to ask “Are you neg?”
Condom“Do you bareback?”
“Yeah, I take it raw.”
“Awesome! What time and where?”
“My place, 20 minutes... Are you neg?”
“Yeah...”

This is a fairly common negotiation in lots of casual hook-up scenarios – on Grindr, in the toilet line at CONNECTIONS, cruising on any number of gay internet chat rooms. ‘Bareback’ and ‘raw’ are both slang terms for unprotected anal intercourse, and ‘neg’ refers to a negative HIV status. But, having unprotected sex based on that ‘txt-versation’ is flawed. Establishing that the hot guy who is about to shag you unrubbered is ‘neg’ is not the end of the story.

Two new faces on the PX team

In the past couple of months, two new men have been employed for two very different positions at the WA AIDS Council.
After a review of the roles undertaken within the Diverse Sexuality Health Promotion Team (DSHPS)  it was decided to create a position that looked specifically at outreach and the services associated with that and the second position to have a specific focus on young gay and sexually diverse young men between 18 and 25.

Demystifying the HIV Window Period

hivmicrobe_smMaybe you’ve got great HIV risk reduction strategies in place – always use condoms for anal sex whether you’re the top or the bottom – but there was that night, not long ago, when both you and the guy you brought home were a bit pissy and you can’t remember if you used a condom. Or, maybe you’ve done the talk-test-test-trust strategy with the new love-of-your-life, and now the rubbers are off with the boyfriend, and on with everyone else.

Syphilis and You

It was about 18 months ago that we first started talking about a syphilis outbreak that was threatening to get out of control here in Perth and since that time we have seen those numbers reduce through letting the community know, people getting tested, early detection and then treatment for those who needed it. The community really got behind this information and should be congratulated for understanding that to contain this sort of outbreak testing is such an important element of good sexual health.

Staying Aware of Domestic Abuse in our Community

Unfortunately domestic abuse happens within relationships in our community. It is important to know the signs and dynamics of an abusive/violent relationship and what to do if you, or a friend, is in a volatile, dangerous, and abusive situation.

Man attacked at G O Edwards Park

Attack at Burswood Park.

A man was attacked in the early hours of Sunday morning across the road from the Burswood Casino at G O Edwards Park, Burswood. The attack occurred at around 4:30am, January 9, 2011.

The man was approached by an indigenous man who engaged him in conversation. The man reported he was then set upon by four other men who appeared from nowhere.

The man reported to the WA AIDS Council that the five attackers bashed him, knocked him to the ground unconscious, robbed him and then smashed the windows of his vehicle smashed. He was extremely distraught and wanted to warn others of the dangers of this particular park. He has reported the attack to the police and his car is currently being inspected by forensics to collect evidence in order to press charges against the perpetrators of the cowardly attack.

G O Edwards Park is infamous for its attacks late at night and early in the morning. Although guys may not be accessing the park for beat purposes, knowledge that it is a beat makes it a prime target for opportunistic attacks like this.

If you would like to learn more about cruising safely, how to go about reporting a violent attacks or your rights at outdoor cruising venues, please check out the workshop section of this website for the upcoming Cruising workshop or contact the WAAC on 9482 0000 during normal working hours.

Experiences of HIV

Gay Community – does size matter?

How many times have you heard people say that there are not enough gay venues in Perth, and that some of our gay venues are becoming too straight? Perth’s gay community, like all communities, always changes and evolves; people come and go, every now and then a new club comes along then closes, new community groups pop up and the Pride Parade shrinks and expands.
