The mining boom has fuelled an increase in HIV infections among WA's heterosexual population.
Gail Williams (The Sunday Times)
February 16, 2008

Department of Health figures show that 70 per cent of WA men who contracted HIV overseas in the past three years were heterosexual.

Beat Violence Rears Its Ugly Head Again
The WA AIDS Council received a telephone call regarding recent assault cases occurring at the infamous McCallum Park (Burswood) beat. According to the information provided by the discreet caller, there has been at least three assault cases in the last two months. His flat mate was physically assaulted. The caller said that the assailants hunted in packs of six, and usually approached the victim by demanding money and car key. The victim does not want to report the case to police because he fears he will be identified as a beat user, and that the ‘police vice squad will be notified’.
